The Student Services and Amenities Fee aims to restore funding to non-academic aspects of the university experience and culture. It allows universities to charge students an annual fee of up to $250 which could be deferred through a HECS-style income-contingent loan called the Student Amenities-HELP (SA-HELP).

There’s nothing in the law that forces universities to direct funds from the compulsory fee to independent student organisations that provide these services or to consult students in the division of their money. Therefore effectively we will be paying another fee on top of existing HECS fees with no guarantee that our money will go to students.Student money should go to students.

We don’t want this fee to become an influx of funding that universities put into their own budget bottom line.Not only should this student fee go towards the student experience and student needs, it should be directed by the students – the representatives elected by the student population.

At Swinburne, its really unclear what will happen… Now, we don’t want to be greedy, but we will definiately put in for our share. However, we need your help. We need to make it clear to the University that students want their money to go into student-run events and services, because only students know what students need.

We conducted a Facebook Poll earlier in the year.

Throughout Spring we’ll be showing these films in full.

Each night we’ll also exhibit the work of our fantastic Swinburne Film Students and host performances and panel discussions on each film’s themes.

THE UNION GOES HOME

WE’RE HOME
AND WE’RE
READY FOR
SEMESTER 2

For the past few years the Union has gone about its quiet business hidden in the dingy halls of the AD Building. With a watchful eye over Haddons, the AD office was a central point where Students using the EN and new ATC building would pass by but rarely visit.

Long before any of us were Swinburne students, the Student Union invested, with the University and the Bookshop, to build the UN (Union) building.

It was a costly but imaginative project…

The result was a student-run cafe, bar and radio studio, right below the Union’s Level 4 admin office where student support and representation were always easily accessible.

In 2011 the Union finds itself on its feet again with a new team is putting on fun and interesting events and providing much needed student-run services.

We’ve re-established a rapport with the University and they’ve offered their support in our goal of rejuvenating campus life at Swinburne.

Now its even been agreed that the Student Union will return to its rightful home, Level 4 of the UN Building.

But the Council aren’t taking it lightly. With a new office our free breakfast will run all day, a Councillor will always be available to assist with any queries, and of course we’ve got plenty of events planned to liven up Semester 2.

Basically: There’s never been a better time to be a part of your Student Union.
